States rights to decide their own laws and taxes. There were plenty of slaves in the North that were still slaves by the end of the war. Emancipation proclamation was basically saying to slaves in the South that if they rebelled against their opressors they would not be punished. Basically, Lincoln gave slaves a license to kill, pillage and rape without fear of punishment IF they won the war. Guess who were left behind when men left for war? Women, children and old folks. Slavery in the US was deemed far harsher in the North by Europeans who by that time abolished slavery in their own countries without violence. The worst place to be a slave in the US was New Jersey. Sherman used Southern slaves to build bridges to move across the South faster. Then demolished said bridges behind his soldiers leaving slaves to either die for being traitors to the South or succumb to elements after they literally durn down towns. And he burned towns that had very few slaves or no slaves at all. Not even getting into details of how few people owned slaves in the South and how higher number and proportion of slaves fought for the Confederacy than for the Union. War started because Lincoln was taxing South to death, abusing his executive authority, provocated them with warships and soldiers where they were not supposed to be. Also, succection started before Lincoln, Abe escalated it into a civil war. He was a terrible president from any point of view: he was in favor of centralised bank and printing money, he was against audits of said money, he suspended habeas corpus, he silenced his opposition in the press, he beat and jailed people protesting against his administration, he provoked confederates into a war, he micromanaged that war and lost his own side many battles and people. Confederates were not good faction but saying Lincoln was a good (or even honest) president is like saying FDR or Woodrow Wilson were good presidents. Sure, he "saved" the Union but he perverted it in every meaningful way to be pollar opposite to what American founding fathers (except possibly Hamilton) intended: centralised authority of federal government superseding state authority. I'm from territories of the former USSR so I have no stake in seeing "South rising again" or whatever bullshit one wishes to pin on me but I care about truth. And truth is not very kind to Honest Abe and his flock before, during or after Civil War.
Okay, one more before bed, I suppose. Um, well, first the Confederates seceded before Lincoln was ever even in the physical White House itself, so I have no idea where you got the belief they seceded due to taxes he was levying when he wasn't even there yet, federal tax wasn't a think until the early 1910s, income taxes until the actual war had started (ironically, the were levied to help deal with those traitorous rebels, so the Confederacy has no one to blame but themselves for its existence), and property taxes had been a thing since colonial times, iirc, but um... boo hoo on paying taxes on the literal people you owned. Sympathy machine broke on that one, but always got a fresh supply of vitriol for the ghouls that whined about that. There is literal no precedent or document ever penned by our nations founders that allows secession as even a possibility. Also, can I get like... any source of the dumb bullshit from the first paragraph? Not the weird borderline racist rapey fetishism stuff aside (seriously, might want to consult a psychiatrist about any potential mental demons) which... yeah, it probably happened, but centuries of oppression, hatred, exploitation, and senseless cruelty for profit tend to not end well for said oppressors once those they once shackled are set free. Sorry, that's just how it flows. While tragic, it is sadly unavoidable especially in the chaos of war. Still a diplomatically shrewd move as the emancipation both allowed us to correct a great moral injustice that had been plaguing this country since before its inception in its current form. Also, it made us appear more favorably in the eyes of other western powers that had long since abandoned what they perceived as a morally corrupting institution, and one that hindsight has allowed us to see isn't economically viable as slavery is deadweight loss. Now, I'm gonna jerk off and go to bed. Congrats on being from the USSR or whatever, but I assure you, the South will never "rise again." The U.S. can and is perfectly willingly to reduce hostile actors into a greasy smear. I don't agree with it... usually, but it is unfortunately the sad reality. They've got that pesky monopoly on violence, you know. But, if Billy Bob thinks he and his AR can deal a military more heavily funded than the next 7 nations put together and the capabilities to turn everything you love into glass if they're put against the wall (which they wouldn't be by a militia of hicks, but hypothetically), then by all means, jump, I guess. Just keep me out of it.
